About the Club
A Caving Community Built Underground
Founded in 1977, the South Bristol Speleological Society has spent decades exploring, documenting and preserving the remarkable cave systems of the Mendip Hills. We hold keys to a number of significant cave systems in the region, including Charterhouse Cave, GB Cave, Longwood Swallet, Swan Mine and many more.
Our members range from those who've only ever seen a cave from the outside, to experienced vertical cavers and long-time diggers who've spent years pushing the limits of what's known underground. The club's ongoing dig at East Twin Swallet — now spanning several decades — is a testament to our commitment to genuine exploration.

Regular organised trips to local caves and beyond, suitable for all experience levels from beginners to vertical cavers.

Our long-running dig at East Twin Swallet continues the search for the Burrington Master Cave — decades of patient, dedicated exploration.
Cave Keys & Access
As a CSCC-affiliated club, we hold access arrangements for numerous Mendip cave systems, helping members explore responsibly.

Location & Area
The Mendip Hills
The Mendip Hills in Somerset, just south of Bristol, are one of England's premier caving areas. The limestone landscape is riddled with cave systems formed over millions of years, with depths reaching well over 100 metres in places.
Being based in South Bristol puts SBSS right on the doorstep of this extraordinary natural landscape — a 30-minute drive from the city centre takes you to world-class underground environments.
Membership
Join SBSS
Membership of SBSS is open to anyone with an interest in caving. Annual membership includes BCA insurance cover, access to club kit, and the opportunity to join trips and the ongoing dig programme.
If you've never been underground before, we run introductory trips throughout the year where experienced members will guide you safely through your first cave — all kit provided.
