South Bristol Speleological Society

Welcome to SBSS!

The South Bristol Speleological Society is a small and friendly caving club based in Bristol to the north of the Mendip Hills. We arrange Mendip trips for most Wednesday or Thursday evenings and frequent weekend trips further a field to Wales, Derbyshire, Yorkshire and have even ventured out to France and Spain.

SBSS is a member of the BCA, CCC, CNCC, CSCC, & NCA allowing us to obtain permits and keys for caves across the country. Full Membership of the SBSS includes an individual CCC (Charterhouse Caving Company) permit, required for the Charterhouse caves. A library of caving books and journals is available to club members. Tackle including ropes and ladders is kept for club trips and we have access to spare kit for people wanting to try out caving.

The SBSS dig takes place in East Twin Swallet (a short walk up Burrington Coombe from the Burrington Inn). If you want to be there at the breakthrough to the 'Burrington Master Cave' come along on a Wednesday evening, take a turn at the winch or have a wriggle in Better Than Sex!

Club meetings are held every 2 months in the Windmill Pub, Bedminster, to arrange the next trip list, elect new members, discuss any events affecting the club and caving in general. If you are unable to attend but would like a particular trip laid on, please contact one of the club officers before hand.

Current Fees:
• Temporary (17 day) Membership is 4.00
• Full Membership is 30.00 per year*

(* Those joining part way through a year pay on a pro-rata basis)
